    Moneris Total Commerce - Processing Gift Card Transactions

    This article will provide you with everything you need to know to process gift card transactions using the Wix POS application and your Moneris terminal.


    Overview

    The Wix POS Register application now supports Moneris gift card transactions. This article explains how to:

    • Activate a physical gift card and load it with value
    • Redeem a gift card for a purchase 
    • Check the balance of a gift card
    • Deactivate a gift card
    • Perform a refund on a gift card redemption
    • Troubleshoot gift card issues. 

    To get started, review the General information about Moneris gift cards section below. 

     

    General information about Moneris gift cards

    What are Moneris gift cards and how do they work?

    Moneris gift cards work much like other gift cards do; they are loaded with value and can be redeemed in store and online to pay for future purchases. They use one of Moneris' payment processing hosts, and can be activated/loaded, redeemed in person, and balance checked. Some Moneris gift card functionality is processed on your Wix POS Register app on the tablet; card entry and deactivation occurs on the Moneris terminal, and refunds occur in the Moneris Gift Portal. 

    Moneris offers variable value gift cards. These variable value gift cards are:

    • cards that are activated and loaded with any dollar amount the purchaser wants, e.g., $56.75, $20.38,
      $138, etc.;
    • redeemable for any value;
    • most common and can be purchased individually as needed.

    Note: Moneris also offers fixed value gift cards meant to be purchased in bulk and loaded with specific dollar amounts.

     

    Note: Other gift cards not issued by Moneris are processed outside of the Wix POS Register application.

     

    Moneris gift cards feature a unique 17-digit number and a three-digit CVC that is covered by a film that needs to be scratched off at the time of redemption. 

    Note: The film covering the CVC number can be scratched off using the edge of a dime or quarter.

    Moneris gift cards can be entered on the terminal (A920 or DX8000) as follows:

    Swipe

    When prompted at the "Swipe a Gift Card" prompt, swipe the gift card as follows:

    A920 DX8000

    Swipe the gift card on the magnetic stripe reader located at the top of the Go terminal.

    Swipe the gift card on the magnetic stripe reader located on the right side of the Go Plus terminal. 

     

    Manual card entry

    Manual gift card entry is not available on either the A920 or DX8000 terminal. Gift card numbers can be manually entered on the Wix POS Register application instead.

     

    Gift Card Transaction Processing

    What do I need to do to prepare to sell Moneris Gift Cards?

    Before you begin selling and redeeming Moneris Gift Cards in the Wix POS Register, you will need to ensure that the Moneris Gift Cards application has been installed by our Web Creation team in your Wix Dashboard. Follow the instructions below to verify that it has been installed. 

    Note: You may need to sync your Wix tablet to get the latest software updates, which will then download the Moneris Gift Cards application.

     
    1. Log in to the Wix Dashboard on a PC or laptop.
    2. From the main menu, click Apps, then click Manage Apps. The Manage Apps screen page opens. 
    3.  Scroll down to the Installed Apps section of the page and locate Moneris Gift Cards.

    If you see the Moneris Gift Cards application, then it is installed and you will be able to process gift card transactions. If you do not see the Moneris Gift Cards application, please contact Moneris Customer Care at 1-866-319-7450.

     

    How do I activate a Moneris gift card? How do I load value on a Moneris gift card?

    Activate & Load a gift card

    Before a gift card can be redeemed, it must be activated and value must be loaded onto it. The activation and loading occur simultaneously when the gift card is first purchased. And, once redeemed, the gift card is still active, and can be reloaded. Follow the instructions below to activate and load value onto the gift card. 

     

    Activating a physical gift card - Card Swipe

    Follow the instructions below to activate and load value onto a Moneris gift card using the card swipe entry method. These instructions apply to both fixed value and variable value gift cards. 

    Note: You are only able to load a fixed value gift card with its pre-defined value, e.g., you cannot load a $25 fixed value card with $30. 

     
    1. On the Checkout screen on the Wix POS Register app, add any products or other line items to the transaction as needed.
    2. On the left side of the Checkout screen, tap Gift Cards.
    3. Tap Sell Physical Gift Card. The Wix POS Register app connects to the Moneris terminal, then prompts to "Swipe card through the reader".
    4. Swipe the gift card on the terminal's magnetic stripe reader. For more information on swiping gift cards, refer to How do I enter Moneris gift cards on the Moneris terminal (A920 or DX8000)?. 
    5. When prompted to enter the amount to load onto the gift card, use the tablet touchscreen to key in the amount being loaded onto the gift card, then tap the symbol.
    6. When finished, tap the Add to Cart button. 
    7. Finish processing the transaction to pay for the gift card and other items as normal. 
    The gift card can now be redeemed at the point of sale or online to pay for a purchase. 
     

    Activating a physical gift card - Manual Entry

    Follow the instructions below to activate and load value onto a Moneris gift card using the manual entry method. These instructions apply to both fixed value and variable value gift cards. 

    Note: You are only able to load a fixed value gift card with its pre-defined value, e.g., you cannot load a $25 fixed value card with $30.

     
    1. On the Checkout screen on the Wix POS REgister app, add any products or other line items to the transaction as needed.
    2. On the left side of the Checkout screen, tap Gift Cards.
    3. Tap Sell Physical Gift Card. The Wix POS Register app connects to the Moneris terminal, then prompts to enter the card.
    4. Tap Enter Code Manually. The screen prompts you to scan the card or enter it manually.
    5. Tap inside the Gift card code field, then use the onscreen numberpad to enter the gift card number. Tap the symbol to proceed. 
    6. Tap the Continue button.
    7. Tap inside the Enter amount field and enter the amount you are loading onto the gift card.
    8. Tap the Add to Cart button. 
    9. Finish processing the transaction to pay for the gift card and other items as normal.

    The gift card can now be redeemed at the point of sale or online to pay for a purchase.

     

    How do I redeem a Moneris gift card?

    Once a gift card has been activated and loaded with value, it can be redeemed at the point of sale or online to pay for all or part of a purchase. Follow the instructions below to redeem a gift card. 

     

    Redeem a gift card - Swipe

    1. In the Checkout screen, add any products and/or services to the bill, then proceed to the payment method screen.
    2. In the Select Payment Method screen, tap the Gift Card button.
    3. In the Amount Due screen, when prompted to swipe the gift card, swipe the gift card on the terminal's magnetic stripe reader. For more information on swiping gift cards, refer to How do I enter Moneris gift cards on the Moneris terminal (A920 or DX8000)?. 
    4. At the Enter gift card CVC prompt, tap inside the Gift card CVC field and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the gift card's 3-digit CVC number, then tap the Continue button. 
    5. Wait while the system processes the gift card. 
    6. When the sale completes, the remaining balance of the card and the total amount due appears. Tap the Complete Sale button.

    The sale completes and the gift card balance is reduced by the amount spent on the purchase.

     

    Redeem a gift card - Manual Entry

    1. In the Checkout screen, add any products and/or services to the bill, then proceed to the payment method screen.
    2. In the Select Payment Method screen, tap the Gift Card button.
    3. In the Amount Due screen, tap Enter Gift Card Number. 
    4. At the next Amount Due screen, tap inside the Gift card number field and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the gift card number. Tap the symbol when finished.
    5. Tap the Continue button. 
    6. When prompted to enter the gift card's CVC number, tap inside the Gift card CVC field and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the gift card's 3-digit CVC. Tap the symbol when finished.
       
    7. Tap the Continue button.
    8. Wait while the system processes the gift card.
    9. When the sale completes, the remaining balance of the card and the total amount due appears. Tap the Complete Sale button.

    The sale completes and the gift card balance is reduced by the amount spent on the purchase.

     

    How do I check the balance on a Moneris gift card?

    It is possible to check the outstanding value of a Moneris gift card at the point of sale in the Wix POS application. Follow the instructions below to check the balance of a Moneris gift card. 

    Note: Gift card balances can only be checked in person. Online customers will need to physically be present in store to check the balance on their physical gift or e-gift card. 

     

     

    Check balance - Swipe

    1. At the Checkout screen, tap Gift Cards on the left menu. The Gift Cards screen appears.
       
    2. On the Gift Cards screen, tap Check Gift Card Balance. The Check gift card balance screen appears. 
    3. When prompted to swipe a gift card, swipe the card on the terminal's magnetic stripe reader. For more information on swiping gift cards, refer to How do I enter Moneris gift cards on the Moneris terminal (A920 or DX8000)?. 
    4. At the Enter gift card CVC prompt, tap inside the Gift card CVC field and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the gift card's 3-digit CVC. Tap the symbol when finished. 
    5. Tap the Check button.
    6. Wait while the system looks up the gift card balance. When complete, the outstanding balance will appear on the screen.
    7. Do one of the following:
      • If you have another card balance to check, tap the Check Another button. Repeat steps 3-6. 
      • If you are finished, tap the Done button. The system returns to the Checkout screen. 

    Congratulations! You have successfully checked the outstanding balance on a Moneris gift card.

     

    Check balance - Manual Entry

    Note: These steps are applicable to cardholders with Moneris gift cards purchased online (e-gift cards).

     
    1. At the Checkout screen, tap Gift Cards on the left menu. The Gift Cards screen appears.
    2. On the Gift Cards screen, tap Check Gift Card Balance. The Check gift card balance screen appears. 
    3. When prompted to swipe a gift card, tap Enter Gift Card Number.
    4. When prompted to scan or enter the number manually, tap inside the Gift card number field and use the on-screen keyboard to key in the card number. Tap the symbol when finished.
    5. Tap the Continue button. 
    6. At the Enter gift card CVC prompt, tap inside the Gift card CVC field and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the gift card's 3-digit CVC. Tap the symbol when finished. 
    7. Tap the Check button. 
    8. Wait while the system looks up the gift card balance. When complete, the outstanding balance will appear on the screen.
    9. Do one of the following: 
      • If you have another card balance to check, tap the Check Another button. Repeat steps 3-8. 
      • If you are finished, tap the Done button. The system returns to the Checkout screen. 

    Congratulations! You have successfully checked the outstanding balance on a Moneris gift card.

     

    How do I deactivate a Moneris Gift Card?

    Moneris gift cards need to be deactivated on the terminal. However, the terminal will need to be taken out of integrated mode and placed into standalone mode in order to process the deactivation. Once completed, the terminal can then be placed into integrated mode again so that you can continue processing other transactions sent by the Wix POS Register. Follow the steps below to deactivate a Moneris gift card.

     

    Step 1 - Place the terminal in standalone mode

    Follow the instructions below to place the Go or Go Plus terminal into standalone mode. 

    1. From the terminal's main screen (that shows the date/time), swipe from left to right. A screen with three options (Exit, Support, and Settings) appears. 
    2. Tap the Exit button. The terminal's sign in screen appears. 
    3. Sign on to the terminal using your Moneris terminal credentials (Username and Password). 

      Note: These credentials may be different than the ones used to sign into the Wix POS Register application, the Wix Dashboard, or any of the Moneris portals.

       
    4. Proceed to Step 2 - Deactivate the Moneris Gift Card section below. 

     

    Step 2 - Deactivate the Moneris Gift Card

    Now that the terminal is in standalone mode, follow the steps below to deactivate the Moneris gift card. 

    Note: Once a Moneris gift card has been deactivated, it cannot be used again.

     
    1. At the Purchase screen, tap the Options button (three vertical dots) in the top right corner of the screen. 
    2. On the menu that appears, tap Deactivate gift card. 
    3. On the "Please confirm your entry method" screen, ensure Swipe is shown in the drop-down menu, then tap the Ok button on the bottom of the screen. 
    4. On the Deactivate - Swipe screen, swipe the gift card through the terminal's magnetic stripe reader. 
    5. At the Enter gift card CVV screen, use the on-screen numberpad to enter the gift card's three digit CVC number, then tap the Confirm button. The terminal processes the card deactivation. 
    6. When the receipt output options appear, select the cardholder's preferred receipt output:
      • To print a hardcopy of the deactivation receipt, tap Print. 
      • To send an SMS link to the deactivation receipt to the cardholder's mobile device, tap Text and follow the onscreen prompts to enter the customer's mobile number. 
      • To send a link to the deactivation receipt to the cardholder's email address, tap Email and follow the onscreen prompts to enter the customer's email address. 
    7. When the transaction completes, the terminal returns to the Purchase screen. 
    8. Proceed to Step 3 - Place the terminal back into integrated mode below. 

    Congratulations! You have successfully deactivated the Moneris gift card.

     

    Step 3 - Place the terminal back into integrated mode

    Now that the gift card is deactivated, you will need to return the terminal to integrated mode to process further transactions with the Wix POS Register application. Follow the instructions below to place the terminal back into integrated mode. 

    1. On the bottom of the terminal's screen, tap the Back (<) button. The terminal returns to the terminal's main screen (that shows the date/time) and is now back in integrated mode.

    Now the terminal is ready to process the next transaction. 

     

    How do I refund a transaction in which a Moneris gift card was redeemed?

    Because the Wix POS Register application does not currently support refunds to Moneris gift cards, Moneris is offering a workaround to be able to provide the gift card holder with a new gift card for the value of the refunded amount. In this case, merchants will be required to access the Moneris Gift Portal to activate and load a new gift card for the amount of the refund. Follow the instructions below to process a refund of a Moneris gift card redemption. 

    1. On a laptop or desktop PC, open a web browser and go to: https://cp.ernex.com/Authentication/SignOn.aspx.
    2. On the Log In page, enter your Gift Portal credentials (email and password) and click the Log In button. 

      Note: If you have not yet created an account for the Moneris Gift Portal, click the Create Online Account link on the left side of the screen and follow the on-screen prompts to create your account, then perform Step 2.

       
    3. In the main portal screen, click the Card Management menu option along the top of the screen. 
    4. On the Actions menu on the left side of the screen, click Batch Activation.
    5. On the Batch Card Activation Request screen, click the Program drop-down menu and select the gift card program to which your Moneris gift cards belong, then click the Continue button. The screen refreshes and more fields become visible.
    6. Under the Attribute To section, click the Business drop-down menu and select your Moneris Total Commerce location. The Location drop-down also populates at this point.
    7. Click inside the Number of Cards field and enter "1". 
    8. Click inside the Card Range Start Number field and enter the 17-digit gift card number of the new gift card you are giving to the customer. 
    9. Click inside the Card Range End Number field and enter the same 17-digit gift card number of the new gift card you are giving to the customer. 
    10. Click inside the Activation Value field and enter the amount you are refunding to the customer (including any taxes).
    11. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the screen. The system processes the transaction and activates the gift card for the specified amount. 
    12. Once complete, click the Log Out link at the top of the screen. 

    Congratulations! You have successfully issued a new gift card as a refund.

     

    Troubleshooting Gift Card Issues

    Issue: The "Couldn't find gift card" message appears when a gift card is swiped or manually entered.

    Solution:

    The gift card number may not have been entered correctly, or the magnetic stripe reader on the terminal did not read the card swipe properly. 

    For manual entry:

    1. Check the gift card number and CVC again. 
    2. Tap Enter Gift Card Number. 
    3. Reenter the gift card number and CVC as prompted. 

    For card swipe:

    1. Tap the Try Again button. 
    2. When prompted, swipe the gift card on the terminal's magnetic stripe reader. 

      Note: Try swiping the card more slowly and firmly through the magnetic stripe reader. You can also try swiping the card in the opposite direction of the initial failed swipe.

    Issue: "Card Reader not connected"

    Solution:

    This message occurs when the Moneris terminal (A920 or DX8000) is not detected by the Wix POS Register application.

    In the event that you see the "To start accepting credit cards, connect your Card Reader" message at the point of sale when you tap Gift Card as the payment method, do the following:

    1. In that message, tap Connect. 
    2. Follow the on-screen prompts to attempt to reconnect the Moneris terminal. 

    Reconnection steps for the A920 and DX8000 terminal can be found here:

    If reconnection does not work:

    1. Manually enter the gift card by tapping Enter Gift Card Number. 
    2. Follow the on-screen prompts to key in the gift card number and CVC value. 
    3. When you have some downtime, contact Moneris Customer Care at 1-866-319-7450. 

     

    Issue: I need to perform a gift card refund.

    Solution:

    Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to perform a refund involving a Moneris gift card through the Wix POS Register application. Merchants will need to refund the transaction in Merchant Direct.

    Once the refund has been processed in Merchant Direct, you will need to reissue a new gift card using the Moneris Gift Portal. Refer to the instructions in the How do I refund a transaction in which a Moneris gift card was redeemed? section of this article. 

     

    Issue: I need to void a gift card sale.

    Solution:

    Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to void a transaction involving a Moneris gift card through the Wix POS Register application or through the Moneris terminal.
